When to go?

Apart from the months of May and June (when the monsoon is at its worst), any time of the year is safe for whale watching in Mirissa, Sri Lanka. From July – October, trips are confirmed depending on weather conditions on the scheduled days. November to April is when you are most likely to not expect any cancellations on your whale watching tour. If departing from Colombo, expect an early morning departure – no later than 4.00 a.m. This is because whale watching tours from Mirissa begin at sunrise so you need to get to the Mirissa fisheries harbor by then – which is about 150kms away from Colombo. However, if you are based in Galle or anywhere on the southern coast, you can depart from hotel at about 5.30-6.00 a.m.
