Sigiriya, an old palace, was once named the 8th wonder of the world. Today, Sigiriya and Dambulla are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the main tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. The city of Dambulla is located 148 km northeast of Colombo in the central province of Sri Lanka. It is home to an ancient cave temple, also known as the Golden Rock Temple. About 25 km from Dambulla is Sigiriya, where the “Lion Rock” is located. This is a 220 meter high rock, on the top of which an old king built his palace.
A day tour to Sigiriya and Dambulla is enough to explore Sri Lanka’s majestic past. Leave Galle around 6 a.m., enjoy the scenic drive to your destination, explore the two cities, and return to Galle by midnight.
